MANDATE AND OPERATIONS

Mandate: Expected to look at events surrounding Northern Ireland’s 30 year “dirty war”.

LAST UPDATE

October 2007: In June 2007, then Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain charged Lord Eames, former Archbishop of Armagh, and Denis Bradley to investigate and consult on possible mechanisms for dealing with Northern Ireland's past. The report is due in June 2008. [Irish Times]

Since 2004 there have been discussions over the possibility of establishing a South Africa-style Truth and Reconciliation Commission to look into the period of the Troubles. However, some fear that such a Commission would be ineffective and would "produce more in the way of recrimination than resolution." [Belfast Telegraph
