MANDATE AND OPERATIONS

Mandate: Initiated in 1991 by a group of 31 former detainees who were held in ANC Camps, formally established by ANC President Nelson Mandela to investigate the complaints of these detainees occurring from 1979 to 1991 and to recommend further actions.

Staff: 3 commissioners (of which 2 were ANC)

Results: Documented 29 cases of disappearance (20 in depth)

The report did not name responsible individuals.

The report recommended that it be made public, which it was, as well as the appointment of a further commission to investigate disappearances and other abuses in an unbiased setting.
