MANDATE AND OPERATIONS

Mandate: Established by Arusha Peace Accord of 1993, later made into law by the Government of National Unity (No. 03/99, 12 March 1999) incorporating a broad mandate with the main focus to assist in the sensitisation of the Rwandan people about reconciliation and unity as well as foster tolerance. 

Structure: 3 Main Programs: (a) Civic Education, (b) Conflict Mediation, and (c) Community Initiatives.

Holding Solidarity Meetings of teachers and other members of civil society aimed at understanding the past and fostering tolerance.

Budget: Annual budget of 300.000 US$ (sponsored by US and EU)
 
LATEST UPDATE

October 2007:  the first National Conference on Unity and Reconciliation was held between October 18-20, 2000, with a second National Summit on Unity and Reconciliation held between October 26-28, 2002. The most recent National Summit was held in December 2006.

The Commission works now as an established permanent institution.

Plans are underway by the Rwandan government to rebury the bodies of the 159 people who were killed during the 1994 genocide in the Nyabisindu cell.  Thus far, a total of 500 bodies have been exhumed. [The New Times]
