Mandate: Established by Parliament to investigate and document the practices of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) government between 1949-1989 (40 years); broader mandate than gross human rights violations - looked at political-historical circumstances and gave political-ethical assessments.
Staff: Made up of 36 commissioners
Structure: Largely research-based with 40 public hearings where papers were presented. An additional 100 witnesses were heard.
