justice in perspective

About Us

Justice in Perspective presents an overview of the transitional justice processes that have been and are currently being undertaken by countries in all regions. These include truth commissions, inquiries, traditional mechanisms, reparations programmes, amnesty programmes, prosecutions and litigation, mainly official but also civil society driven.

This online resource provides the background for the transitional justice process in each country and summaries of the different mechanisms, with details of mandates and outcomes, as well as easy access to key resources and sites for further study. The information provided for each mechanism is its name, period of operation, mandate and operations, results, background and the latest update, where applicable. The site also seeks to outline not only the outcomes of each mechanism but also continuing efforts to address issues of truth, justice and reconciliation that either flow out of the mechanism or are a result of its shortcomings or limitations.

Justice in Perspective is part of the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation’s focus on building civil society capacity to engage in the field of transitional justice. Another initiative is CSVR’s role as Steering Committee member of the African Transitional Justice Research Network, which hosts a substantial database of organisations and literature, as well as the only international email listserv on transitional justice. To become a member of the ATJRN listserv, please register at www.transitionaljustice.org.za.

CSVR was founded in 1989 and has offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa. CSVR adopts a multidisciplinary approach to understand and prevent violence, heal its effects and build sustainable peace locally, continentally and globally. CSVR’s work includes a focus on transitional justice, peacebuilding, criminal justice reform, trauma studies and support, victim empowerment and violence prevention, with a specific focus on the prevention of gender-based, youth and collective violence. CSVR is increasingly working on a pan-continental basis to share expertise, facilitate learning exchanges and strengthen the capacity of Africa’s civil society and regional organisations.
